5 ways to protect your family this flu season

Seasonal flu spreads fastest in crowded indoor spaces, which is exactly where most of us spend our winters — offices, classrooms, and family gatherings. A few consistent habits make a bigger difference than any single precaution.
Start with hand hygiene. Washing hands for at least 20 seconds, especially before meals and after being in public spaces, remains one of the most effective ways to cut transmission.
Keep shared surfaces clean. Door handles, light switches, and phone screens carry the virus longer than most people expect, so a quick daily wipe-down in high-traffic homes goes a long way.
Prioritize sleep and hydration. A well-rested immune system responds faster to early infection, which often means a shorter, milder illness rather than none at all.
Finally, don't wait to isolate if someone in the house develops symptoms. Early separation — even just a few days — meaningfully reduces how many family members end up affected.
If symptoms include high fever, difficulty breathing, or last longer than a week, it's worth a same-day consultation rather than waiting it out.
